Beginning the Lufia series, Lufia and the Fortress of Doom is an RPG for the SNES.
In Lufia and the Fortress of Doom, you have control over a maximum of 4 characters and take them around the world, talking to people, visiting towns and villages, doing little tasks for people, and of course, getting them into turn-based battles with enemies. All these elements connect to a fantastic storyline, about the revival of evil gods.
Your characters move around in four directions (up, down, left, right) in the towns, dungeons, and on the world map. To get to other towns and dungeons, you have to travel across the world map, where special locations are represented by icons (a village is one house on the world map, for example).
RPG's are liked for their complex stories, with lots of plot twists, and their battle systems. You don't just complete the game's dungeons for the sake of it: you always have a reason to do so. For example, you might have to save a little girl that's being held in a ghost's lair. When you do so, the story will develop, and the townspeople will change their attitudes towards you. The story gets deeper the more you play the game.
In Lufia and the Fortress of Doom, you encounter monsters randomly. When you are challenged by a monster, you are taken to a battle screen. You can see information about your own team, and who you are fighting. You have to select what your characters do - they have one turn per round. They can use items, attack the enemies with their weapons, use magic, defend themselves, or run. The order of attack is based mainly on speed. Sometimes, you might select an attack, but the enemy gets you first! You need to be a good thinker to succeed, but regardless you will go nowhere if you don't train.
The Lufia games are fine examples of what RPG's should be about, and Lufia and the Fortress of Doom is no exception. Search the various auction sites now and get a copy if you haven't already! Take pleasure in training your characters and saving the world!
