Four teams (each with three characters) can be chosen from: Team Sonic, Team Dark, Team Chaotix, and Team Rose. With your chosen team, you must proceed through a set of specially designed levels with all three characters at once, solving puzzles by switching team leader and character formations. The story of the game is told through cinematic pre-rendered movies, and levels offer plenty of replay value because of their multiple paths and secret missions.
