Is America the modern equivalent of the Tower of Babel?

Postby WindChildFuko » Sun Oct 09, 2005 2:42 pm

Neo_is_Bad from LiveJournal.com posted this and I thought it was worth discussing.

The [Bad Religion] song [Skyscraper] talks about the Tower of Babel, and I've noticed that the biblical story can be analogous to the USA. It brings up some interesting questions... one of which is "Is America too powerful?"

For those of you not familiar, here are a few points about said story:
- the goal of the people was to build a tower so tall it could reach the Heaven
- this is symbolic of a people with tremendous power and resources
- this was viewed by God as being arrogant
- whilst the tower was being built, God prevented them from progessing by reprogramming their brains (making them speak many different languages)
- the project crumbled as a result of the people inability to cooperate

Is the U.S. getting too powerful? Are we getting too arrogant?

The more powerful the U.S. gets, the larger the rift between different religious, economic, political, and social barriers become. Everyone is speaking very different languages, and it's impeding our progress.

The outside world has seen this arrogance and frowns upon us. This causes an even greater dichotomy in our society.
"God Bless America" doesn't mean "God damn everyone else."

The world is my country and to do good is my religion.

Killing one man is murder. Killing 100,000 men is foreign policy.

I can agree with that in some ways. I feel America is far too arrogant and like any other empire in history (yes we are an empire, believe it or not) we will eventually fall. It wouldn't surprise me if America crumbled in my lifetime. Just look at the debt we have as a nation. It's not going to just fade away. We have the largest debt of any country on the planet, and the Republicans feel the only good thing to do is lower taxes and add to the debt! Fah!
Dekar rules!

I can kinda agree with this, but I also think that stupidity and arrogance is a world wide thing.
