Spam Accounts

Postby Chris » Sun Mar 28, 2010 12:45 pm

Hey all,

It looks like a number of sneaky spam bots (e.g. allenbarclay, ashtonfarell, jasontamis) managed to register and post topics undetected. Their posts were generally non-spam, but the entire purpose of them was to expose their signatures which all included links to a particular website.

I have disabled all of the accounts and deleted their signatures, but left the topics open. If you see anymore sneaky spam bots trying to do the same, please drop me a line and I'll sort them out.

(I'll try and pop on regularly to check for them, but I'm super busy in real life for the next couple of weeks.)

Cheers!
Chris

Heh... I was wondering whether they were bots or overly enthusiastic newbies. Thanks for your trouble, in any case! :)

It just makes me wonder.

To be honest, I could be considered the same thing, just without the link in my signature.

or chris could just appoint an active member as supermod to handle such things while he isnt here.

"Their posts were generally non-spam"

No, but it was blatantly obvious their content was copypasted from other websites. Unless you actually believed people randomly start saying "this movie was a financial hit, which made over [blablabla]" when asked "did you like it". It was pretty obvious these werent regular members posting.

Can anything be done about the spam bots? When i return here i find a lot of activity has happened only see that 95% of new comments are from bots.

Their upbeat nature is starting to piss me off....somebody needs to kick their ass

Or you could do what the system did to me. It registered me, but wouldn't let me log in until I e-mailed you.

Besides, what's the point of spam bots on a dying forum? It isn't like driving around in Crazy Taxi becoming addicted to Pizza Hut due to in game advertising.
