Ye Old Aussie Poems!

Postby Camu » Sat Apr 01, 2006 10:52 pm

This poem isn't mine. A very famous Australian Poet by the name of A.B (Banjo) Patterson Wrote it in the 1800s. I'll add more in later Posts, but I think this is Enough for now. This poem is about a Swagman (Sheep Stealer) who gets caught by Troopers (Police) and can't accept the punishment for his crimes.

Waltzing Matilda!

Once a Jolly Swagman Camped by a Billabong,
under the shade of a Coolabah tree,
And he sang as he Watched and waited till his billy boiled,
'Who'll come a-waltzing Matilda with me?'

A jolly jumbuck came to drink at the Billabong,
The swagman jump up and grabbed him with glee,
And he sang as he Shaoved that jumbuck in his Tucker-bag,
'You'll come a-waltzing Matilda with me'

Up rode the Squatter, Up upon his Thorough-bred,
Up rode the Troopers, one, two, three,
'Who owns that jumbuck that you've got there in your Tucker-bag?'
'You'll come a-waltzing Matilda with me'

Up jumped the swagman and sprang into the billabong,
He drowned himself by the Coolabah tree,
And his ghost may be heard as your passing by that billagong,
'You'll come a-waltzing Matilda with me'

Here's a Glossary for those who need it:
Jumbuck: A sheep
Swagman: A man who steals Sheep
Coolabah tree: A tree native to Australia
Troopers: Unofficial Police, as there was no Police force, all Enforcers were Troopers
Billy: A can/kettle type container used to boil water
Tucker bag: Like an Out-back Lunch-box. Used to keep food in
Squatter: Trooper leader / Trooper Scout
Once a jolly swag-man camped by a billabong
Under the shade of a Coolabah Tree
And he sang as he watched and he waited until his billy boiled
Who'll come a-waltzing Matilda with me?
