Best Video Game Genre

Postby Chris » Sun Feb 15, 2004 8:42 pm

I was doing a bit of editing in http://dmoz.org/Games/Video_Games/ and thought about genres. Which video game genre is your favourite and why? Mine has to be roleplaying (RPGs), as you can really get 'deep' into the better ones (plot lines etc.).

I pefer Roleplaying, but you could quite possibly mix a lot of those genres into RP's and make a completly new type of game.
Fan Fic Character of the hour:

Appears in: Guardians, Sapphire Awakens.

Cervius: A hero to his town. A patient fellow who loves to pull pranks. Cares for his younger brother. However... has a past that he can not forgive himself for.

I think it depends on the situation...

I mean, if you have friends over, not many are likely are going to sit around and watch you fight random battles and level up @_@
(Too bad I'd be one of those people who would watch other people level up)

For more than 1 person, I'd say a fighting game or a party game.
For a lonely night by yourself, nothing beats a good long engrossing RPG
I like to smile like this:

RPGs are changing though... Phantasy Star Online and Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles are technically RPGs, but they're multiplayer games. :P

I agree with Shocker. It does depend on the situation, although if you put it in a way where you have to choose one, like now, it would have to be rpg's. More people are starting to buy them and with the help of the Final Fantasy series being real popular, I think that added more rpg fans and is what really got rpg games on the role..

Yeah, good point! :P

If I could have a second vote I would choose Simulation. There's something really fun about building cities and houses then crushing them...

RP always gets my vote, but if I did have a second one, then I would have to say puzzle. With all of the puzzles that you can encounter in an RPG, puzzle games can help you solve tough puzzles without cheating, and vice versa (possibly)
