I think they're pretty...

edit: And Guy's hair WAS that long in the official artwork.

Don't know about Dekar, though.

Really, they don't look much different other than it's by Naora. o-O

Forfeit Island doesn't let you direct link.

Guy's hair was like five or so centimeters shorter, and didn't have as much body or bounce as this Guy's hair seems to have.

Dekar always had that ugly headband in the official artwork. I've never liked Official!Dekar that much. I like Sprite!Dekar much better. Hell, I think I like E:TLCbtG!Dekar better than Official!Dekar.

Oh, I like the comparisons. I liked the black and white sketch versions of the comparisons, but the colour is nice, too — you can really get a good feel for it through the slight tweaks to the palettes. Maxim, Guy, and Tia seem much more bright and vibrant in terms of colour, which helps them stand out a little more. So does Artea, but for different reasons — looks like they relied more on contrasting colours (the yellow of his hair and the blue of his outfit) to make him stand out a little more. I like that.

I've seen a lot of grumbling about Dekar's new design, but I kind of like it. He reminds me a bit of Zack from Crisis Core in terms of aesthetics and personality, palette-swap aside. (I could have done without the pink hair, personally, but I don't mind it too much. Maybe it's just my screen, but the shots that I've seen always seem more whitish than pink. It's more like an accent hue to give it some kind of hue other than "white.")

Probably my favourite new design is Selan. Then again, she's my favourite character from the original, sooo... yeah. Let's face it, the new design is hot. I like the shift towards a more solidly "blue" palette, rather than the cyan they'd been using, and I absolutely frekaing love the new design. The chakra (if that's what they are; I can never seem to see them very well) are a nice addition, and I can see those coming in handy for puzzle stuff. Kinda like the Arrow tool from the original Rise of the Sinistrals. Honestly, her new design almost reminds me of Quistis from Final Fantasy VIII — not in a bad way, mind you, and it's different enough to set her apart as far as design goes.

...Blah, blah, blah. Bottom line, I like the new designs versus the old ones, and I like being able to compare them like this. Still can't wait for this release.

To be honest these are square designs more then anything. The accesoires and just all the details in them. It's not the old designs at all. Which is nice in a way, but on the other hand gives the "One in a dozen Square designs".

the new designs have too much of a final fantasy feel to it to be honest. Indeed, new dekar has a Zack feel to it, while Selan is almost identical to Quistis.

Out of all the new designs I do like dekar best though. It captures his arrogance/confidence perfectly. As for the others.... meh.

Maxim - Squal, FF8
Selan - Quistis without glasses, FF8
Tia - Selphie, FF8
Guy - Zell, FF8, given Guy is more Bulky, perhaps he's more like Wakka

Erim/ Iris - Ultimecia
Dekar - Irvine

I could go on, but there's so many resembling with the FF8 charactersheets/ personalities it's kind of as if they just copied those instead of the original Lufia character sheets (which in a way is a real shame).

Especially costume wise it resembles FF way too much. The added element of gathering stuff (not sure what it was, didn't read _that_ much in it yet) is also alot of FF like.

Square Enix is good in making games looking alike sadly and they did the same for Lufia. Still I'm going to buy it and hope the resembling is mostly on paper and not in the actual game :).

the welcome screen is really nice.

*facepalm*

At least you announced it first. I prefer waiting until E3 before I jump the gun.

Heh. Nice seeing these comparisons. I guess I like both in most cases. The only one I still don't like is Guy, heh. I don't mind Dekar much, it's a new way of showing him but not a bad one. And his large grin in the game is just perfect.

So.. Square Enix is good in making very similar games? I guess one way to avoid getting disturbed by that is to play fewer SE games. I haven't played any of the Final Fantasy's except for 4 and 6, so the characters from Lufia DS all look very original and well-made to me.

Incidentally...

That's called a changed story. :)

Actually, the characters look nothing like the original FF4 and FF6. If you look at Amano's artwork (where the first FF portraits came from) you'll see the difference.

As for the artwork, it looks closer to FF8 than any other (FF 7 had more unrealistic manga-like characters to adapt with the playstiation graphics engines). At least it doesn't look like FF10 or FF13.

Or Crystal Chronicles (not the crystal bearer). Then again, that style would match Lufia I's japanese artwork.

Right, that was my point.
