Turn-based or Time-based Combat?

Postby NeoGades » Wed May 11, 2005 3:29 pm

Do you like combat with a time limit before each attack, or where each player takes their turn in order?

I just voted turn-based, but on second thought time-based would probably work better online. For example, what if somebody got into a fight then was disconnected -- the other player might get stuck in the battle waiting for his opponent to attack!

The current system I have active now is turn-base but if the player doesn't choose a move within 15 seconds, he forfiets his turn. It is still a pain waiting those 15 seconds though.

Time, simply for being an online game. It's more appropriate.

The reason I brought this up, if we decide to go with time limit, we can have speed variable that determines how fast their attack bar builds up.

Many things could influence this besides the character's speed. Such as weapon, armor, spell duration. I know that isn't true Lufia, but some changes are required to make the game enjoyable over the internet.

I don't really like time based battles, but for this game it would be better, so I voted for Time Battle.

Basically a mesh between FF and Lufia. Sounds like a good move. (an advanced ATB, if you will).

Very good idea for the time variables. We should discuss it more in-depth, next time we talk Neo. Anyone else have any ideas for that sort of thing?

Although I'd prefer turn-based, time-based works a lot better in an MMORPG.

I voted for turn-based. but Sinrevi told me that time-based is handier. So I think time-based is better.

Yeah. A player starts out with say, 5 seconds before each attack, and that is affected by the characters speed, and how much and how heavy their weapons/armor is.

In my games I enjoy turn-based but as most have said, for an online game it needs to be time.

Time does make more sense to me. Because then, someone who's been playing a long time has an advantage at equal levels with someone who's just started.

Plus if you include being able to fight each other, it makes it so that the battle is just as dependant on the individual skill of the players as much as their class and level.

Just my two cents ^_^
If someone opposes me, they will eventually die, and no one will cry.
If someone helps me, they will be shown the riches of the world.
If someone is indifferent to my cause, they shall be mocked, humiliated, and shamed.
This is true because I am a hero.
