Dealing With Spam

Postby Chris » Tue Jun 27, 2006 12:11 pm

Hey folks,

I have to finish a report for work today (usually do it on a Thursday, but I delayed it due to exams). Afterwards, I want to deal with the spam problem from the root - registrations. I believe the majority of these spam registrations are from automated bots, so if I customise the registration system a little, then they won't be able to register their dodgy accounts.

Also, I have a million private messages (well, not quite) about ending battles. I'll go through these too... they take a little while to sort out as I have to alter the database manually... and if you look at the leaderboard today you'll see how fragile the RPG scripts are. :)

I think I found the reason for the spam registrations! I must have disabled e-mail confirmation when the servers were having problems sending out e-mails. I've re-enabled it, so these sorts of registrations should slow down.

I was going to try something like that, but I think spam should slow down now that e-mail activation is on again. While spammers will still continue to register, the majority of their accounts will not be activated! :)

Yeah, it's good to hear that we won't be bothered with threads with mountains of adult content anymore.
