I was going to revamp and evolve Lufia II's battle system by combining it with something similar to TLR. Also the game is 3D so I want to make sure that this new layout suites a next-gen game.

Well, here it is!

Using the simple system for Lufia II, but adding 3 rows instead of a \/\ shape

Rows and Damage Levels
Damage Power_______________Damage Resistance
_HIGH______ [_]_[_]_[_]_[_]_[_]______LOW_

Further up you are, the more damage you cause and take. More behind is vice versa: Less damage you cause and take.

Now for my favorite part about this new layout!

If one letter occupies multiple spaces, then the monster is bigger than one space.



Yes! Enemies can now attack you on all four sides. Engage two monster groups at once and you fight both at once. It might look intimidating at first but think about it this way. Most of the time there's only this:

Aren't these new battlefields beautiful. Remember they're only using the simple concept from Lufia II's formations. The only difference is that there is three rows you can position your party. Speaking of positioning, party members do not have to be in different rows nor do they have to be in different colums. Building some good aspect from something like let's say The Legend Returns.

The traditional formation:

Another note is that if a party member is behind another, then unless the monster can fly, shoot, or has a reach attack, they can only attack the front ally.
Example: Playing it safe:

___________[1]_[2]_[5]_[_]_[_]___________
___________[3]_[4]_[_]_[_]_[_]___________

In order for a normal monster to hit number 3 and 4, they have to go through at least number 1 and 2 first.

Causing some major damage with this formation
Brute Force:
___________[_]_[1]_[3]_[5]_[_]___________
___________[_]_[_]_[_]_[_]_[_]___________
___________[_]_[4]_[_]_[2]_[_]___________

The guys in front will do a lot of damage, however at the same time they'll lose more HP.

Only in desperate times is this necessary:
Left Side:
___________[1]_[_]_[3]_[_]_[_]___________
___________[2]_[_]_[_]_[_]_[_]___________
___________[5]_[_]_[4]_[_]_[_]___________


If you have a group of monsters on the left, then you fight the same rules as normal. Except that for you left would be front and right would be back. If anything in this form you have two extra back rows. The fourth column means you can't take any damage except from magic and shots. Go one more further and the only thing that hurts you is Mass Effect spells. Keep in mind that if the only monster group left is on the left and/or right side(s), then your layout will rotate 90 degrees to match a balanced fight.

In other words no left and right side only battles.

Heh... You definitely have some interesting ideas there.
One thing... You made some pretty cool setups for the monsters. Perhaps you could add some of them for the characters as well? Like somehow surrounding an enemy by splitting up outside of battle or something... Just brainstorming there.

Only in certain event battles my good friend. Only in certain battles...

Would you think in the next Lufia, SinReVi would love this set-up?

Besides, these are examples of what you can do. If the battle form isn't going as planned remember you can always change the entire formation on anyone's turn.

Yeah. And what they do need is someone who's a fan of the series, who really wants to do it justice and not just throw something together to say they made another game to please the fans. Because fans want a good game, not just random stuff calling itself a Lufia game.
