Yes, that makes sense. This was one of the names where I really was incertain whether I should change it or not. As there are many enemies which are called mad I finally decided to let it remain mad.

However, maybe I'll think about it for a newer version. Thanks for the suggestion, anyway.

Maybe it's a problem with the ROM. You need a ROM with header.

Well, and I guess I have to change one more thing. I somehow must have missed the line of Parcelyte's lieutenant commander which has a completely unnecessary break after lieutenant.

So I could change Mad Golem as well. After there, by any chance, still a few ideas for some another enemies like these:

Armor Dait
Aqualoi
Doben (abbreviation of doberman?)
Winger (sure it has wings, but are there creatures called so?)
Serfaco
Pug (isn't it a dog?)
Bruse
Coridras
Tartona
Armor Nail
Sentopez (is this Centipede like vivify suggested? I'm completely unsure here)
Garbost
Brokion
Snow Gas
Great Coca
Nuborg
Ochi Warrior
Warm Eye (why warm?)

Well, and I started a new Kureji Lufia playthrough on YouTube. Guess Tarantula got completely pwned.

I'll take a look at these-- I'll forward the list to my brother, too, who actually does this (RPG translation) for a living, and see what he thinks. :)

I did notice, though, that at $283c75, "She-Viper" should actually be "Sea Viper". The Japanese is シーバイパー [shii baipaa], which makes it an understandable mistake-- IF the translators didn't realize that "sea" has to be translated with the "sh", since there's no "si" syllable in Japanese. Compare "Seahorse" (シーホース, shii hoosu) and "Sea Hydra" (シーヒドラ, shii hidora).

One thing I noticed just compiling the list: "Sentopez" is actually セントローペ [sentoroope], which might be a pun that should be translated "sentrypede". I'll wait to get a response from my brother, though.

Thank you very much! :D

Guess I was confused about the Sea Viper, too, as there's a mythological creature called She-Viper as well. So I was unsure and didn't change it. Guess you (and vivify^^) might be right.

Could you maybe have a short look over all the other enemies as well?

Another thing is the Torrent. vivify said it might be Trent, but I was unsure there as well.

Cirne, thank you for checking some enemy names for me. I only know English, so I picked up a few enemy names based off the name, romanization, and knowledge of other RPGs.

I was also thinking of what Warm Eye is supposed to be. Is it "woomu ai" in kana? If so, it might be Wo-Mu Eye, after Wo-Mu, the original name for the Droplet line of spells. In which case, I suggest Water Eye or Droplet Eye.

...But I don't recall this enemy living long enough to cast Droplet/Vortex/Water Dragon, so I dunno.

Okay, I made a very handy little page with Japanese names, the current patched names, and monster images. (If anyone wants a copy, do let me know. :) ) Anyway, I glanced through it and here's what I noticed (sorry, I don't have file offsets for these, just monster ID):

#23, Archdemon, is actually ルシファ [rushifa] -- "Lucifer"
#26, Winger, is ウインドナ [uindona]. I don't know about this, but it seems closer to "wind" than "wing"
#77, Big Butterfly, is デスバタフライ [desu batafurai] -- "Death Butterfly"
#89, Unicorn, is イッカク [ikkaku], which is actually Japanese for "narwhal".
#185, Warm Eye, is indeed ウォームアイ [woomu ai].

#10, Armor Dait, and #75, Armor Nail, are アーマダイト [aamadaito] and アーマネイル [aamaneiru] respectively. I'm not breaking the romanization into separate words here because I'm not sure about it. Armor, as in Armor Horse, Armor Goblin, etc. is usually アーマー [aamaa] -- note the elongated second A. These might be something completely different from "armor", like possibly "Armadite" and "Armanale" or something totally different. I'll wait to see what my brother thinks about these.

Guess I was a little bit lazy about Lucifer as I only checked that Fiend was Demon and thought that Archfiend would be analog.

However, I can't change Big Butterfly into Death Butterfly because that name is just too long. I could only use an adjective with 3 letters at maximum. Therefore, I did choose "Big".

And I would like a copy, of course. :D

There's also this list as well: http://www30.atwiki.jp/sansara_naga2_sfc/pages/12.html

Yep! I used that list to generate the page, along with the info at http://surune.hp.infoseek.co.jp/est2/index.htm (lots of REALLY DETAILED info about Lufia 2 there, if you can read Japanese) and pictures from http://shrines.rpgclassics.com/snes/lufia2/monsters.shtml. You can look at the list at http://cheri.shyou.org/cirne/lufia/monsters.html, or download it at http://cheri.shyou.org/cirne/lufia/monsters.zip. The Japanese text doesn't have any transliterations, though I could probably write a script to put that in there, if you want.

Yeah, I thought about that with the Death Butterfly too... I just wasn't sure if you knew about the proper translation. How about abbreviating on the other end and calling it the "Death Butt"? =D

Also, I got a response from my brother, I'll copy it here:

Hmm, let's see... I can say from experience, though, that Japanese
developers often just slap together good-sounding kana names without any
real thought behind them, so there may not be much to do for these unless
you want to rename them entirely (which might not be a bad idea).

>アーマダイト - Armor Dait
Wasn't there a "demonite" enemy? This could be a play on that, since it's
got armor ("armored demonite" -> "armored-ite"). Or I could be thinking of
a completely different game.

>アクアロイ - Aqualoi
Looks like an aquatic creature, hence "aqua", but that's all I can say.

>ドーベン - Doben (abbreviation of doberman?)
Probably derived from "doberman", yeah.

>ウインドナ - Winger (sure it has wings, but are there creatures called so?)
If it's one of a family of enemies, ウインド "wind" could be an elemental
reference.

>セルファクオ - Serfaco
No idea, though note that a closer transliteration would be "Serfaquo" or
"Selfaquo".

>パグ - Pug (isn't it a dog?)
Looks like just a random name. The image doesn't look like a dog to me,
though; my impression is it's a made-up name for a made-up creature.

>ブルス - Bruse
Probably derived from "bull". I'd have gone with "bullus" if I was staying
literal.

>コリドラス - Coridras
Not sure. Where does this monster appear? I do recall having an
impression of "cold" when I played the JP version, probably from コリド,
though ordinarily I'd expect コルド or コールド if that was the devs'
intention. As a side note, there's a genus of South American fish called
Corydoras, but this definitely isn't a fish.

>タートナ - Tartona
I remember my first impression of this name being related to "turtle"
(タートル). I guess it sort of does look like a turtle, but I don't have
any other ideas.

>アーマネイル - Armor Nail
"Nail" probably refers to all the spikes and claws. "Armor Spike" or
"Armor Claw" might be a better name.

>セントローペ - Sentopez (is this Centipede like vivify suggested? I'm completely
>unsure here)
セント is presumably from "centipede", and ローペ is probably a random
suffix to make it sound creative.

>ガーボスト - Garbost
No idea. Sounds like just a random name.

>ブロキオン - Brokion
My first reaction is "misspelled Brachion" as in "brachiosaurus". Of
course, brachios weren't carnivores, but maybe that's why it's "Brachion"
instead...

>スノーガス - Snow Gas
Does it blow cold breath? If so, there's your answer. (: No idea
otherwise.

>グレートコカ - Great Coca
Presumably "Great Cockatrice" (if it's a more powerful version of a
Cockatrice enemy).

>ヌーボー - Nuborg
ヌーボー can also be "nouveau" (French), though I don't see any such
connection here. Probably just a random name.

>オチムシャ - Ochi Warrior
"Ochi" is probably from 墜(お)ちた "fallen" (like "fallen angel").

>ウォームアイ - Warm Eye (why warm?)
Who knows? I can't get anything else out of it.

There you have it. :) I do kinda like "Fallen Warrior"-- works especially well considering the sprite looks sorta zombie-ish.

Incidentally, #181, Shade Warrior -- while カゲムシャ [kagemusha] can be translated as kage (shadow) + musha (warrior), there is an actual word "kagemusha" which means a body double, originally used for military leaders. No idea what you'd do with this, but food for thought.

Also, #166, Bile Jelly -- the "biri" in ビリジェリー [biri jerii] could also be translated as "last", as in last on a list.
