Lufia DS Character Designs vs. Lufia II Character Designs

Postby MysticIris » Tue Jan 04, 2011 3:38 am

I'm kind of curious about what everyone's thoughts are on the new designs versus the old. I've always liked the original designs, particularly of Maxim's, because the characters looked mature and they didn't just look like your average anime character heroes that are in so many games today. So, when the new designs were shown, I had some mixed feelings about them. Some of the new designs looked good to me, while others left me longing for their old look. I think it will be easier if I just run them down character by character.

Maxim--I liked his new design overall. I miss the mature look that I liked from the old design, but he still looks like Maxim and looks good overall.

Selan--I really like her new design. I liked the original one, but the new one is just as good. I love her hair in the DS version and I have to think about which one of the two I like better.

Tia--This was one that I really wasn't sure about when I first saw it. I think it matches her new character in the DS version pretty well, but overall I like her original design better.

Guy-- The original was better all the way on this one. I know they made him look like a meat head because he acts like a meat head in the game, but I still don't like that look. I think my problem is that I really didn't see Guy as a dumb as a rock male character in the original. Dekar already fills that character role, so I don't really think we needed another character like him.

Dekar--I didn't mind his redesign too much, except for the pink hair. When I first saw his new design, I thought he was blond with red streaks, then I got the game and saw it was pink....Why would you give the coolest character in the game pink hair???? Sorry, just my pet peeve on that one.
Lexis--I liked his original design better. I know they made him look really old so he'd be a NPC, but I think they could have done without making him look unkempt and ancient.

Artea--Both designs are good on him, though I wish they had shown him with his eyes open more in the DS version. I still like the original design a little better than the blond one just because I always thought Artea in L:RoTS had a really unique designs. He had that really pretty purple hair design with the streaks in it instead of the stereotypical blond hair that elves normally have.

Iris--I like this new version as well as the old one. They're very different, but they fit the character of Iris in their respective games.

Idura--Definitely an improvement over the original. I think this redesign was my favorite one of all.

Berty and Betty--Aside from Bart's sex change, I liked their DS designs a lot as well. I thought Berty's design was pretty cool.

Gades--I like the DS design on him. The red hair, dark skin look reminds me a little of Ganondorf from Zelda.

Amon--I really don't like the DS design of him. The new version makes him look like a cross between a poor beggar and an old hag. The old L:RoTS green-haired, gold armored sprite wasn't great, but it was better than this.

Erim--The L:RoTS Erim design was my favorite design for her in the series and the clear winner for me. However, the DS design wasn't bad, but I do wish there had been some difference between her and Iris.

Daos--The DS design is different, but I do like that he looks really terrifying in the new version. The dark body and red eyes certainly suit him well.

Wow, that was long. Anyone else want to chime in with their opinions on this?

I like them both, but I'll admit at first, I was surprised=P (not because I disliked the designs, I was just surprised =P I don't think it was even known (in English ?) yet that the game was going to be in a more futuristic setting when I saw Maxim, Selan and Gades first)
I mean, for years I've been looking at Lufia II Maxim, then suddenly there's Maxim with a leather jacket =P (before the first trailer appeared, I remember I made jokes about he looks like he belongs in Lufia III RC and that Maxim would fly to Doom Island on a flying motorcycle instead of using the Excerion.)

Guy - I don't mind how he looks ingame, but... when looking at the artwork I think (anime) guys should wear either a full shirt or no shirt at all! But I still prefer Guy and his "shirt" over male characters who wear belly shirts =P

I didn't realize it was going to be a more futuristic game until I started playing it. You can imagine just how surprised I was by the changes, but I managed to adapt just fine.
As for the Maxim on a motorcycle to Doom Island part, LOL! Yeah, it definitely was a change from the plate armor Maxim of the old days. When I first saw the design, I read a lot of comments saying he looked like Squall from FFVIII. I didn't reply, but I felt like saying, "Except Maxim is about ten times cooler."
Guy--I can't say I'm a fan of the kind of half shirt look that some anime characters have either. I think they were trying to make him look like Tidus from FFX.
Thankfully, I can't recall playing a video game where I had to look at a male character in a belly shirt for the whole game. :P

So... You never played Final Fantasy 12? No wait, I think that was a vest.

New character design is a breath of fresh air from the traditional JRPG. Still cliche in the anime world though. I wish they didn't steal my idea of putting a Maxim in a jacket.

At least in Lufia DS Maxim doesn't look like the blonde pony tail Maxim for Lufia Comic...

Actually, I have played FFXII and Vaan does wear a vest with no shirt. I remember that mostly because I watched a video review of the game where the male reviewer really wished he would put on a shirt. However, I never finished the game. I didn't really like it all that much, so I quit about half way through.
*Looks at pictures of blond Maxim from Lufia Comics*
O_O Whoa, I had no idea there were Lufia comics. Who makes them? And, I agree, I am glad Maxim was not designed as blond with a pony tail for the DS.

That would from an official Nintendo Power magazine in I think Dutch or German?

Oh, and I screwed with the text in case you haven't noticed.

I noticed. I used to watch the English dubbed DBZ when I was a kid and I distinctly remember those lines of dialogue. Of course, that those two lines are the source of many jokes on the internet helps as well.

Lufia Comic was a free comic book, for promoting Lufia II.
It roughly follows the storyline from the beginning until the first Gades fight. Then it says you have to buy Lufia II if you want to know if Maxim will be able to defeat the Sinistrals.

I own the Dutch version, but you can read the German version here: http://www.nintendo-power.de/comics/lufia-857

Tia:
I actually her design is supposed to be some sort of alternate character interpretation.
From a certain point of view: in the original she was a crazy bitch. She tried to tame the untamable (Maxim). Went into a dungeon which had monsters and the center point of collosal siesmic activity, alone. And she tried to face off against a dude who destroyed an entire town (Even if she had back up, it still would of been scuicidal).

Clearly this shows that her calm and sensible manner is just a front for her hyperactivity.
As for the way she dresses in Curse of the Sinistrals: Clearly as a tease to Maxim, which is begging him to get in on.

My only problem with her newest design is that they made the already youngest character in the cast, even younger.
-------------
Idura:
He has by far the best redesign out of all the other characters. The hair, the scowl, the book and his eyes. They all scream for his well done look.
It is a shame that he doesn't keep his rapier from the original sprite. I actually think it could of worked in combination with his book.

Even with the lack of the rapier, I would still rank it 5/5. But I have a gripe about his character that goes beyond appearences (Remember, there is a personality aspect to a character and not just his/her aestetics. Let's not forget what he sounds like).
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MARhiWpKCRQ

Above is a link to a clip of Mandark laughing. Idura sounds NOTHING like Mandark when he laughs. Idura should soundlike Mandark because he looks like a bad-ass version of Mandark.
For this reason: I am giving his character a 4 out of 10...

--------
Prince Alex of the Kindom of Bound: (Remember when I said earlier: Looks aren't everything to judge a character?)

As Golum said to Samwise (on the topic of Potatoes): "You ruined it".

My problem comes from the fact that (due to plot compression) Alex is no longer an only child. The reason why he acted like he did around that Red Jelly (and battle in general) was because his parents spoiled him due to the fact of them having no other children.
His brother is now the guy who was formerly the prince of Augario.

Normally I don't mind the compression of the plot, but that little bit stung a little.

I'll definitely admit that my biggest complaint here is how so many characters from specific towns were moved to other ones due to compressing the length of the game and merging numerous places together. Leon and Thea are by far the worst, in my opinion, because the shift doesn't simply move them to a new location, it pretty much rewrites their entire history by putting Leon as the older brother of Alex and Thea as the princess of Gratze, a heavily militaristic company that actually acted as the sole, well, "threatening" nation in the game (the only other real threats in Lufia II and RoL being god-like beings causing monsters to rise up across the world).

Others...

Maxim and Selan - Mostly the same. They haven't been changed much overall, so I don't mind them.

Tia - I don't care much for her design. Her personality seems to fit well for her as a spunky girl, but I don't like how they significantly altered her appearance. At least Maxim, Selan, and Guy look mostly the same. What makes it worse is that they changed her hair, too, though I guess they did that because there's already so many blue-haired characters in the game...

Guy - At least he holds most of his original traits. The meathead look doesn't suit him, though. That's my only complaint.

Dekar - Other than his hair, his look works very well. I do prefer blue to pink, though... his hair style still largely resembles his original look, though. Oh, plus, in RoL he did have shades of pink in his hair, too.

Artea - I'd have at least preferred them to stick the characters with their original hair color. That's one significant trait that I felt really should have been kept for most characters. Still, he's pretty good regardless. Oh... he'd have been far better off if he just stuck with a bow, though.

Lexis - Too old. They could have kept his original age. Plus, they completely contradict his personality in the original, what with his comment "I can use swords and magic!" (even though he really can't, well, use swords in the game...)

Jessy - Okay, she looks like a slut... I don't like that.

Jaffy - I like his look. About the same. I don't know about that "twin," though... seriously...

Rochy - Freaky. Rochy was just fine in the original. Greedy, yeah, but he definitely wasn't fat. I prefer his original look by far.

Alex - He looks pretty good to me. I don't like how they made Leon his older brother, but I do like how they more defined his immaturity.

Joseph - I really like his look. It fits him.

Leon and Thea - You already know my opinion. Their actual physical appearances looks really good, though.

Leefa - I like her personality portrayal... just the minor issue of her being moved because of the game shortening. Considering the fact that she's basically a peasant in both games, her clothing does fit well.

Idura - Okay, he freaks me out. And there's the hair issue again. But, I like the changes in backstory and personality. I'd probably rather have him wield a rapier than a book, though.

Gades - Still has the same main traits, good enough for me.

Amon - I hate him. Period. They completely ruined his look. Personality-wise, though, he's quite scary. Good for a Sinistral.

Iris/Erim - Once again, the hair issue bothers me. Erim has always had blue hair, and they should have stuck with it. Otherwise, good overall.

Daos - Kinda weird, but this is actually one that I far prefer to the original. He looked weirder in that outfit from Lufia II... seriously, he didn't look so frightening. Now THIS looks frightening. Perfect for a Sinistral of Terror.

@Hedgie.
Why do you think he should have a rapier over his book? I reckon he should of had both.
After all, in the RoTS he was a summoner. That's why I could picture him with both.

The face of Idura's I think made him look very childish in the original, that's why I like his more serious look.
